Narwhals demonstrate strong site fidelity, returning season after season to the same summering and wintering areas. Individual whales, pods, and populations maintain fidelity to particular fjords, bays, and offshore grounds across multiple years, a pattern that forms the basis for how scientists classify narwhals into distinct regional stocks. This tendency to revisit familiar waters allows researchers to track populations and understand their movements with greater precision than would be possible in more migratory species.

This predictable behaviour confers ecological advantages. By returning to the same feeding areas annually, narwhals exploit food resources that have become familiar and accessible. Equally important, repeated use of consistent migration routes allows the whales to navigate through seasonal ice conditions using knowledge gained from previous journeys. Inexperienced animals benefit from the presence of older individuals that remember safe passages through ice-choked waters.

Site fidelity, however, carries conservation implications. Because narwhals are reluctant to abandon preferred areas, they remain vulnerable to localized disturbances. Increased shipping traffic, industrial development, or rapid shifts in sea ice extent within a traditional feeding or wintering ground may stress a population that lacks flexibility in choosing alternatives. The whales' attachment to specific locations means that threats to particular regions can have outsized impacts on the stocks that depend upon them.

Understanding narwhal site fidelity is therefore central to effective conservation planning. Protecting key seasonal habitats and minimizing disruption to traditional routes supports the long-term resilience of Arctic narwhal populations.
