Scientific understanding of narwhals developed gradually over centuries, constrained by the extreme remoteness and ice-covered habitat of the Arctic whales. Early European knowledge of narwhals came almost entirely through trade in their distinctive tusks, which were long believed to be the horns of unicorns and commanded high prices as rare curiosities.
